Mez-ItzAs some of you following me on Twitter might already be aware, I left the friendly confines of Splash Page HQ last week to visit with the fine folks at Mezco Toyz and get the first look at some very cool, customized figures from their new line of "Mez-Itz" vinyl toys.

A few months back, Mezco announced that they were resizing the popular line of collectible figures from a 2.5- to a 6-inch scale, and would be delivering bunches of the blank figures to artists and animators around the world to create their own unique takes on the toys. From comic creators to musicians and animators, a variety of artists answered their call, and 60 of the custom Mez-Itz are going on display for the first time at San Diego's Comic-Con International this month.

But you can get your first, exclusive look at some of the coolest figures weeks ahead of time here on Splash Page!

From Hellboy to Michael Jackson and a variety of other tremendously creative takes on the figures in between, I'm pretty sure you'll be as impressed as I was with the results of Mezco's Mez-Itz experiment. But let's the pictures do the talking here, eh?

Mez-Itz

Here's the full spread that was laid out when I arrived at the Mezco showroom. The artists who created the Mez-Itz include (left to right in the back row): RTLITETOO, Miss Monster, Irene Mendonis, Jason Jerde, Stephen Blickenstaff, Trevor Zammit, Daniel Brodzik, Josh Izzo and Ken Usanami.

Mez-Itz

On the left side of the photo above is the Mez-Itz designed by popular "Hellboy" artist Guy Davis, and on the right is a figure customized by musician and animator Voltaire. Sandwiched between them in the back row is a Mez-Itz created by Daniel Brodzik of Front Line Studios inspired by Val Kilmer's character in "Tombstone." (I'm pretty sure that one's my favorite of the bunch.)

Mez-Itz

On the right side of the above photo is a Mez-Itz customized by artist Angus Oblong, creator of "The Oblongs" animated series.

Mez-Itz

This "Thriller"-inspired Michael Jackson Mez-Itz was created by Joe Dunn of "Joe Loves Crappy Movies."

Mez-Itz

These two "Hellboy II" movie-inspired Mez-Itz will be exclusive to Toys R' Us stores.

Mez-Itz

And finally, saving the best for last, this Hellboy Mez-Itz was inspired by the artwork of the character's creator, Mike Mignola, and will be an exclusive Comic-Con Mez-Itz at this month's convention.

You can drop by the Mezco booth during Comic-con to see these and many, many other customized Mez-Itz on display.

What do you think of the customized Mez-Itz? Which one is your favorite? which one would you like to own?

"Twilight" is coming to officially coming to comics, and seeing as how comic book creations like Iron Man and the X-Men helped inspire author Stephenie Meyer to write "Twilight" in the first place, that shouldn't surprise anyone. Though movie fans won't be seeing photo-realistic versions of Meyer's characters straight off the big screen, certain features unique to "Twilight" and "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" actors such as Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart will influence the artistic rendering by Korean artist Young Kim.

Twilight Manga

Both Meyer's original descriptions and characterizations and the actors' likenesses will influence the graphic novel's look, according to EW.com. The article states that Meyer will oversee every panel of the new project.

The manga-style adaptation of Meyer's books sounds, from the story's description, as if it will be a straight words-to-comics appropriation of existing stories, but there is no word yet on how many books are currently planned. At least for now, though, everyone asking where the "Twilight" graphic novels are has their answer.

Nevertheless, this announcement will likely be a hot topic when "Twilight" fans descend on Hall H next Thursday for the "Twilight: New Moon" panel at San Diego Comic-Con. Since that room is going to be packed with a hybrid crowd of "Twilight" and comics fans, you can bet these new books will be on a lot of minds.

What do you think of the artwork for the new "Twilight" graphic novel adaptation? Are you planning on going to the "Twilight" panel next week at Comic-Con? Sound off in the comment section below!

Green Lantern: First Flight"Battlestar Galactica" veteran Tricia Helfer -- who played the sometimes benevolent but often nefarious Number Six on the series -- is bringing a "strong and sweet" sensibility to her latest role in the comic book world, Boodikka in "Green Lantern: First Flight."

In the DC Universe animated film, Helfer's character is one of many in the Green Lantern Corps, sometimes finding herself at odds with Hal Jordan, voiced by Christopher Meloni. Helfer described Boodikka as a character with a lot of strength -- even if others around her wouldn't necessarily agree.

"Boodikka's a fighter, a protector," Helfer explained. "She is very honorable in that she does what she thinks is right, even if some things go against the grain. She's certainly not an evil character per se, but she does things that she thinks are good for society. She's not really sexy in terms of her personality, so she's not trying to reel Hal in -- that relationship is more like comrades. So I wanted to play Boodikka both strong and sweet."

"Strong and sweet" doesn't just refer to her character in Helfer's opinion -- she pointed to that very balance as the main reason for starring in the "Green Lantern" animated picture.

"What made me say yes to doing the movie and voicing Boodikka was that I just thought it was a really sweet story," said the actress. "I didn't really have any preconceptions of the role or the story. I'm not very well read in comics, so I went into this with a completely open mind. I loved the script -- there was no flipping through it. It was a good, solid story."

Helfer certainly has the credentials in determining what is and is not a good story after four seasons on the widely-revered "Battlestar Galactica." In addition to the show's space-bound premise, Helfer sees a few commonalities between Boodikka and her "BSG" counterpart.

"I wouldn't say she's like Number Six at all, really, but there's some clones of Six that are similar," she said. "I'd kind of say she's a little bit like Natalie from the fourth season of 'Battlestar' because she's a bit of a leader in her own way, she's strong and intelligent, and she does what she thinks is right when she feels very strongly about certain things -- as Natalie did taking sides against her Cylon counterparts."

What do you think of Helfer's assessment of Boodikka? Were you a fan of her sultry character on "Battlestar Galactica"?

Hack/SlashRuthless killers and demonic murderers, you are officially on notice: there's a raven-haired serial killer-killing serial killer about to hack and slash her way onto the big screen... and she has a new director.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, commercial director Fredrik Bond will direct "Hack/Slash," based on the horror comic book from Devil's Due Publishing. The movie is in the works with Rogue Pictures, the Relativity Media subsidiary responsible for geek-friendly films "Shaun of the Dead" and "Doomsday."

"Hack/Slash" stars Cassie Hack, a young woman that has become a killer of killers. Hack travels from town to town across the country hunting serial killers molded after "Halloween's" Michael Myers, "A Nightmare on Elm Street's" Freddy Krueger and other horror icon-inspired murderers.

The movie currently boasts a screenplay by Justin Marks, the writer responsible for "Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li." He's also written drafts of the hotly-anticipated "Super Max," "Grayskull" and "Voltron" movies.

It's taken some time for Cassie Hack to slash her way onto the big screen. The film was first announced years ago with director Todd Lincoln attached to helm the feature. Lincoln -- currently attached to direct another DDP title, "The Nye Incidents" -- has apparently been dropped from the movie in favor of Bond.

After years of waiting, the film finally looks to be shaping up for a winter 2009 start date. There's no word on casting yet, though a 2007 report from ShockTillYouDrop pegged actress Megan Fox for the role of Cassie. Once upon a time, I'd have said her involvement in both "Fathom" and "Jonah Hex" precluded her from having a third comic book franchise to her name... but a certain green somebody just proved that theory wrong.

Are you excited for "Hack/Slash"? If Megan Fox can't do it, who should play Cassie Hack?

Spider-Man & DeadpoolGiven all the buzz surrounding mouthy mercenary Deadpool these days, it was only a matter of time before the character crossed paths with one of the most famous members of Marvel's masked chatterboxes, your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man -- and that's exactly what's going to happen this November in the pages of "Amazing Spider-Man" #611.

Not only will the issue pair two of the publisher's most banter-friendly characters, but -- you might want to make sure you're sitting down for this one, Deadpool faithful -- the match-up will be scripted by fan-favorite "Deadpool" writer Joe Kelly. Responsible for Deadpool's celebrated, surreal run in the late-1990s, Kelly will script the one-shot issue that pits the mouthy, movie-friendly heroes against one another in what he described as "a big, baroque comic book story that devolves into a 'yo mama' fight."

Kelly is joined by cover artist Skottie Young and interior artist Eric Canete on the tale, and offered Splash Page readers the first peek at the issue's hilarious cover, as well as some thoughts on how the brawl -- and the battle of wits -- will pan out.

"We're just trying to keep the Deadpool machine going," said Kelly of the character's Spider-Man cameo. "But in the end, it's all about who's the bigger wise-ass in the Marvel Universe."

Kelly told MTV News that a mysterious third party is responsible for bringing the two together in the issue, with the hope that "throwing a canned tornado" at the wall-crawler will keep him busy while more nefarious machinations unfold behind the scenes. And according to Kelly, the meeting of the two characters is less a "team-up" and more a clash of two characters whose similarities are actually their most divisive traits.

"Their jokes styles are so different," explained Kelly. "Deadpool is so absurd and mean at the drop of a hat, but Spidey is so light. ... [Spider-Man] tries to take the high road, but when you spend enough time around Deadpool, you can't help coming down to his level."

As for whether he could ever see the two characters' movie counterparts mixing it up on screen, Kelly said he doubts the capacity for theaters -- and audiences -- to handle the two characters appearing in the same place at the same time. (And given that "Deadpool" is being developed by Fox and the "Spider-Man" franchise is a Sony property, there's probably not much to worry about in that respect.)

"It would be the mother of all buddy movies," he said of a potential Deadpool/Spider-Man meeting on the big screen. "I don't know if the screen is big enough for Deadpool's ego and Spider-Man's size."

Nevertheless, he promised that readers will all get the crossover chaos they can handle in "Amazing Spider-Man" #611.

"With Deadpool, I get to make the plot as wild as possible," said Kelly, "because, well... it's Deadpool."

"Amazing Spider-Man" #611 hits shelves in November featuring a story by Joe Kelly, cover art by Skottie Young and interior art by Eric Canete. Check out an exclusive preview of the cover to the issue below:

Looking for Inspiration - Gathering Questions

  • Jul. 15th, 2009 at 11:06 AM
So I'll have a panel up in the Gathering Art show...and I have NO idea what to put up!
Seriously, I'm drawing blanks here.

So I'm asking you, oh fellow fans who will be at Gathering (or won't. I'm not picky). What would you like to see from me?
Comedy pieces? Movie Parody Posters? 3D stuff? Character stuff? Original characters?
Not asking what will sell, just asking what you think would be fun to see from me.
If anything I can use this as a spring board to get my creative juices flowing.

And on the same note....
I'll be once again hosting the Costuming 101 panel this year. It will probably be the same ol same ol.
So another question. If you come to my panel would you like to hear all about the basics as usual or would you rather I do something completely different? What would you like to hear about? Want to make it a mini workshop? Bring your masquarade costume and we make it a con Stitch n Bitch?

And just to pimp, I'm going to be hosting the cracked out competition "Project Rungarg" as well this year. Think of it as Iron Artist but with costumes. (I think some anime cons do this and call it Iron Cosplay).  I'll be providing some wacky cheep materials and the attendees will be separated into teams. They then have to create a cannon character costume in 30-45 minutes using said materials and do a runway show.. A good time will be had by all!
I'm really hoping to make this panel a lot of fun so please come attend it if you're going to Gathering. If anything, it will be a good laugh.  I'll post the time and date soon...because I'm totally blanking right now.

 Digital 45s large

PvP at the San Diego Comicon

  • Jul. 15th, 2009 at 4:30 PM

Next week is Comicon International at the San Diego Convention Center, and the PvP crew will once again be exhibiting. Our booth location has moved this year a bit from last. We asked to be tucked snugly in the bosom of Penny-Arcade and the Comicon powers that be have granted our wish. So this year you can find us in booth 1235, or as I like to call it, Penny-Arcade’s elbow.

The great news is that this year the rest of my Webcomics.com buddies will be right down the aisle from me. No running across the entire convention floor to get all four signatures on your copy of How To Make Webcomics. We’re all in the same aisle, throwing distance away from each other.

This year we’ll have a nice assortment of PvP stuff for you to buy, including some items that aren’t even available in stores yet. The big ticket item this year is the PvP Awesomology. A 600 page hardcover that collects all of our comic strips, in order, from 1998-2005. It’s hitting retailers today and I will have some available at the con for you to pick up. In addition, we’ll have all of the previous PvP trade paperbacks, including the brand new BOOK SIX, which is hot off the presses and collects all PvP strips from the year 2006.

We’re also bringing posters, shirts, plushes and our remaining stock of Scratch Fury statues. Since many of you are traveling long distances to see us, we wanted to give you a deal on this stuff. In previous years, you’ve asked if we have any special offers for the con and we always come unprepared. Not this year. We’ve devised four devious Comicon Packages of Savings. So if you are looking to pick up more than one item, be sure to check out our overhead banner for a package that serves your needs.

We’ll be talking more about the show as it approaches, but I just wanted to get the booth number in your head and make you aware of what we’re bringing to sell.

Hope to see you all out there!

The Bridge One Down

  • Jul. 15th, 2009 at 9:54 AM

This is the bridge that is closed, and causing all my commutes lately to be hellacious. Friday, I had to take the long way home--up to I-5 via Lynnwood and the 405--because they closed the 520 bridge to let the barge through carrying these joints.

It's kinda neat seeing the construction in progress.

Stupid Client Quote #7226

Quote #7226 | Submitted by: loadedmind

I used to work for a local ISP who served DSL and dial-up customers. They shipped CD's to customers upon signup. One day, a lady calls me and says she's having trouble getting the CD to go into the computer. She then goes on to explain how it seems go to in part of the way, then sort of stop as though there's resistance. I explained she shouldn't have to force it and could she please explain what the "device" looks like that she's trying to put the CD in. She said, "Well, while you were typing up my information, I kept pushing and eventually got it just about all the way in, but I'm having trouble flipping the lever to lock the disk into the thingy". At this point, I knew the trouble had really begun. I said "I'd really rather you didn't try and force the CD and first explain what this "thingy" looks like please, and are you absolutely positive this "thingy" is intended to receive CD's? At that, her husband (in the background) confirmed my worst fears. She managed to force a CD into a 5.25" floppy drive. You know, the one that has the lever in the middle that flips downward? Holy Lord... If there were ever a mauler award, surely she'd be champion of the world.
