Well Blah...

  • Nov. 12th, 2009 at 8:17 AM
The cold has escalated into the plague.
Joy.
I don't think its a flu because I don't feel as knocked out as I would with the flu. Feels more like a really bad cold. Either way it kinda sucks. Home from work today. Going to spend my day on the couch wrapped in blankets drinking tea and dripping.
If I don't feel up to snuff by Saturday, off to the doctors with me!
Ugh.

life is but a stream, sweetheart

koigu sockObligatory sock shot!

This is that yummy Koigu that I mentioned in my last post.  I couldn’t help casting on.  They’re going to make a wonderful pair of Yule Socks, methinks.  I’m just turning the heel now (toe-up), so we’ll see whether I got the measurements right soonish.

New feature on ye olde blog: a link to a new page labelled “lifestream”.  For those who aren’t aware of what a lifestream is, it’s the feed of information generated when you use microblog (Web 2.0) applications like Facebook or Twitter or Flickr or whatever.  It may seem somewhat egotistical, but I include it as a stream-of-consciousness page for folks who would like to see what I’m prattling on about when I’m not blogging.  Since it takes comparatively less time to twitter or upload a photo to flickr, this includes the generated content in a relatively easy to follow format that keeps it all in one place for thems who are interested.  Those who aren’t can just overlook it and keep on going.  No harm, no foul. :)

I checked out a few Firefox addons today, as I realized that there was a potential to get rid of some of my various windows and/or extraneous applications.  Well…to make a long story short, out of a bunch of applications, I pared it down to a feed reader called “Feedly” that presents the sites I want to read in an attractive, easy-to-follow format.  Much better than Google Reader or bloglines (ah, how I disliked bloglines).

So yeah.  Slowly, but surely, the windows are coming under control.

Anyone want to go to a con? lolol.

It's likely to land on eBay with a bunch of other crap I'm getting rid of.

They Might Be Giants

  • Nov. 11th, 2009 at 12:33 PM
John and I attended the They Might Be Giants show at the SoDo Showbox last night. We were a little worried that John wouldn't be well enough to attend, but he was well enough by Tuesday. He had been diagnosed with bronchitis on Friday and given antibiotics. It was semi-fortunate that I had already planned on being out-of-town, so that I could hopefully avoid accidental gifting of the bronchitis.

We thought we should arrive a little late, so as not to tire out John or me (I tend to have feet problems at general admission concerts). So we grabbed a cab around 8.30ish, thinking, by the time we get there, the opening band will be done. Well, actually the SoDo opens doors at 8. The opening band didn't start until about 9ish, I think, and that meant the Giants didn't take the stage until 10. Oi.

Fortunately, the Showbox and the Monqui promoters had decided to post TV screens with text messages randomly appearing. So you could text in and see your message and have other people react to the message. It quickly went from people thanking people for taking them to the concert and wishing happy birthday to people to Internet LOLspeak, Rick-rolling, and regurgitating Giants' lyrics.

Some messages I particularly recall: (roughly paraphrased)

- To whoever checked the green Legend of Zelda hoodie in coatcheck, you rock!

- Thanks to everybody for coming out on a raid night.

- Happy 174th Birthday Grandpa.

- They must be giants are wesome. (John and I have adopted the word "wesome" already.)

- Oh, I hope they play something from Flood. OMG! (This was billed specifically as a Flood show.)

- (somebody's picture of a corgi)

I was fairly unoriginal and texted lyrics from Twisting. John was more original but sadly his texts never showed up, while mine did. Tsk, tsk, Monqui.

The show was pretty excellent all around. The first time I saw TMBG it rawked so hard that they held the Best Concert Evar title until I saw The Living End and the Aquabats at Slim's. (Roughly equivilant in terms of fun.) This time was no exception, and while I might have longed for a chair, that was the only fly in the ointment. They started off with Meet the Elements, but once they were warmed up, they launched into Flood. (Instant karaoke on the part of the crowd. I've never seen a crowd sing along so much. We were singing along too.) They'd play two or three Flood songs and then break and play a mixture of early and new songs. There was an interlude with sock puppets which was fairly amusing. All in all, I felt like I had a nice mixture of Absolute Favs and new stuff.

I didn't see signs about recording devices until we were leaving, so I did get minorly reprimanded by a security guard because I taped thirty seconds of Birdhouse in Your Soul on my phone. I was slightly peeved initially--the phone camera sucks mightily and it's a laugh to think that anything I get off it is going to be any danger to Official Recordings of the show. But he has no way of knowing that, and he was pretty nice about it. Considering I saw somebody led away later in the show, I have no complaints. (The Showbox has a semi-flexible rule. Some shows it is okay to record if the equipment is non-professional. Other shows you can't record at all, and I guess TMBG said it was okay to take pictures but not recordings.)

Anyway, the show was truly truly WESOME. I enjoyed turning around to see John singing and bouncing along.

Songs played: Meet the Elements, Flood, Shooting Stars, New York City, Cowtown, Shoehorn, Fingertips, Mesopotamians, Why Does the Sun Shine, and Why Does the Sun REALLY Shine, among many others. They noted that they had been dispensing out-dated information re: the sun, and so they have a new song to update the info.

Cabbed home and put my aching feet in the tub.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

  • Nov. 11th, 2009 at 8:29 AM

First, the bad.

-So it looks like my poor old Mac has finally bit the dust. It was almost 6 years old so I'm not too surprised. I'm still going to take it to the Apple store to see what they can do, or at least try to retrieve the photos I haven't backed up (Vegas, Gathering, and Stacy's visit). While I'm annoyed, I'm not really devistated. There wasn't a lot of art work saved on the comp, all my music is pretty much backed up on my iPod, and all my vital stuff (website, art, RPG logs) I have backed up elsewhere. Not a tradgey, just a major annoyance.
BTW, just want to let EVERYONE know that Dasha aka [info]tigrise and Mr Jeff are AWESOME AWESOME people. They sat on the phone with Max and my un tech savvy ass for almost an hour trying to help. Dasha, as usual, you're my freakin' hero. You are getting free art for life, damnit! FOR LIFE!!!

-Unfortunately since we just bought a house, the chances of me getting another Mac, even a Macbook are slim. I've decided that house and bills come first (how adult of me) and computer payments come in at a distant second. So looks like I'll be switching over to PC for a while *DRAMATIC CORD! COLLECTIVE GASPS!*  Once again, not a tradgey, just an annoyance. But I do need a working desk top of my own (currently using Max's laptop at home) and I use a PC at work every morning so I do know my way around one. I explained to Max that me switching to PC is along the lines of him converting to Catholicism. He seemed to understand that analogy. BUT I do plan to pick up a Macbook in the future. I've always wanted one anyways. This gives me an excuse to start saving up!

-I am really stuffed up and coughing...Ugh. No colds please! I've been hitting the echinasia tea and Emergen-C pretty hard right now.

- I think I ate my body weight in pizza last night... O.o

On to THE GOOD!

- I think I ate my body weight in pizza last night!

-Going to get back onto the garb train and test drive the new studio space this weekend! I emailed Doodle about coming by the Friday to help me install the new lights  AKA- Doodle is going to install new lights for me while I hold the ladder for him.  I'm excited to work on things again! I would like to try and get something new done for Aniversary simply because I want to sew in my new studio, damnit!  I haven't gotten a working TV in there yet (my sister is giving me her old little one) but I do have a iPod hub so I can listen to my music and podcasts while I work. WOOT! I also plan to splurge just a touch this Friday and buy a bookshelf I need for the studio. It feels nice to have the creative vibe back in my veins again.

-The series V? Yeah, its actually really good. It hasn't lost me yet and series tend to lose me after the second episode.I was a big fan of the original mini series when I was a kid and so far I've been liking how the rebooted the idea.  I haven't been really into TV lately. I still like Heroes but I haven't felt the want to watch it lately and this season of Project Runway is not only boring this round but also on crack so I've given up on this season and will wait until next. This means I've only been watching South Park and Venture Brothers regularly. Its nice to have something non animated in my must watch shows. *L*

-I recieved good news yesterday and something I've been working towards for years is finally done. So hooray!

-I got my wedding album on Sunday and its GORGOUS! It was definitely worth the wait.

-Gonna start saving up for a much coveted Macbook.:)

-Getting a PC means I have married tech support. I won't have to bother poor Dasha and Jeff in the middle of a raid. ;D (I know they didn't mind one bit but I still felt bad for interrupting plans!)

The Ugly

-...I so need a hair cut. O.o

Wednesday Fan Art

  • Nov. 10th, 2009 at 11:00 PM

Soon we’ll back to regular updates and I’ll roll out the new website, but in the meantime, here’s our third week of art devoted to some of my favorite comics online.  This week we move away from longform narrative comics and head for strip land, with Arthur (duck) and Flaco (lizard) from Dave Kellett’s Sheldon.

Sheldon

There are many strips online that I enjoy deeply, but Sheldon is the only one that makes me feel like I’m a little kid again, pressing my nose with delight against the daily newsprint funnies while I wolf down a bowl of Rice Chex before school.  Calvin & Hobbes was a strip at the time which, even if I didn’t get every joke, was so exuberant that I loved every panel.  I think 9 year-old me would’ve felt the same way about Sheldon.

As it is, 26 year-old me happily returns to Sheldon every day, snerking at the obscure “grown-up” or pop culture jokes and quietly enjoying the sheer silliness of it all.

Dave Kellett is also a bonafide funnybook scholar and a stand-up fella.  Bless the internet for bringing him to us in this day and age!

Sleepers’ Mom Has Got It Goin’ On

Jeremy draws Sleepers’ Mom somewhat differently than I did.  (Mine’s the one on the left.)

mom1 mom2

Michael explains that Sleepers is imagining his mom in the Black Whip’s costume, whereas in the new issue we get to see her as she actually appears.  Which would mean that Sleepers is crazy and has a reverse Oedipal complex.  Maybe he’ll snap and start Dextering the other characters!  I’d read that comic.

The weekend recap

  • Nov. 10th, 2009 at 3:54 PM
So after a morning of a computer that wouldn't pass its start up screen, things have gotten better. I just had a wacky cranky morning which sucked. Hopefully when I get home Max will have gotten my poor mac back up and running. *grumble*
But I received some spectacular news shortly afterwards so I'm feeling a lot better.  Hooray!
I did find out looking at photos of my adorable and incredibly handsome newphew, Danny always makes me smile no matter what the situation.

The weekend was fan-frickin-tastic!

Chelle dropped in to visit and we had a total blast. I manage to expose her to my wacky life and she survived it which is always a good thing.;D. She flew in on Thursday and we sat up most of the night chatting while my husband fed us rum...bad husband! Or good husband depending on how you look at it. But we had us a happy ol time. The next day we went to Disneyland. We took off late since we wanted to sleep in and got to the park around 2pmish. The park was pratically empty that day so we had no troubles with lines or over crowded parkiness. I even managed to get my annual pass renewed. So I'm back into the fold again!
Who wants to go to Disneyland!? ;D
Saturday we chilled around the house, our friend Das came over and the four of us played Wii Resort and Rockband most of the day until we went down to old town and met up with Capt'n and Dan for Creole Cafe. MMmmmmMMmmMMmm. We then went back to our place for hooka, beer, and chill time. It rocked. I had to work on Sunday my luckily Max kept Chelle entertained and she got to watch the chaos that is Pale Maiden cooking a test feast. I got home just in time to eat it all. All I can say is if you're going to Calafian Aniversary, sign up for this feast! it is insanely good.
I am so happy I got to spend time with Chelle my Belle. its been a long while since we had more than just a afternoon to hang out and catch up. LOVE YOU CHELLE!

Been slowly plotting more garb goodness to work on this weekend. I found all this great fabric I bought then forgot about while it was shoved to the back of the closet in our old place. I'm considering making yet another Italian Ren or even a Persian coat this weekend. I really want to start working on stuff again. Must get hands moving again!
I am also considering making a viking apron. I was kinda against them for a while but the look has really grown on me. Anyone know where I can find a dcent pattern for this?

Chelle also inspired me to get my esty shop up and running. That is my goal for the new years, to get that going.

I also desided I that I'm going to have a garden tea party at my house...as soon as we actually have a garden. I am in need to do something uber girly for no reason.

So yeah, computer stuff sucks but the rest of the day has been MUCH better.
Note: This got super long, so I am cutting it in two.

Actually, I had no adventures in Utah. Alas. More is the pity. I hung out with my family, which could qualify as an adventure for some people, and get you a merit badge in Cat-Herding.

Start at the beginning. A month or so back, I dispensed to my mother that I was unwilling to make a seasonal trek to the homestate. I had my reasons, multiple and many. Firstly, seasonal treks to homestates are expensive. I can not stay with most of my family, and am normally bound to get a hotel room and/or a rental car OR as with this trip, be at the mercy of other people's schedules and vehicles. Secondly, seasonal trips usually mean the winter season, which covers the NICE things about Utah, like the scenery, with snow and ice and render it largely unenjoyable. (I can skate, but I do not ski, snowboard, or snowshoe. And I purely hate driving on ice.) Thirdly, seasonal trips tend to eat up my vacation time, and instead of vacation which is supposed to relax and refresh, one ends up trotting round to Xmas party after Xmas party and squishing in visits to everybody. This is the curse of the hometown visit. It is not that I do not wish to hang with my loved ones, but not under such fervid conditions, while everybody is loud and noisy and non-drunk on holiday cheer. Fourthly, I either have to drive (with ice and snow and canyons galore) or fly (not a fan).

So....I said, no holiday visit from me. Let's plan a trip to Arches in the spring and socialise that way!

But my grandmother fell ill and had to be hospitalised. And reports issuing from my mother were grave. They'd got hospice care in for her and Grandpa. Various medical details were dispensed. Adjustments were made to medications. Metamucil stock dropped by 50%. The upshot of this is: my grandma is not doing so well. Her mind is slipping, she is no longer vigourous nor capable of taking care of herself as well as once she was, and her body has begun the long, slow process of shutting down. And well, she's old. She COULD live for years and years yet, like my maternal grandparents did, with a twilight lasting nearly a decade. She could also be carried off next month. In fact, when I broke down and bought the plane tickets, I was worried that she might not survive til I could visit.

So I bought tickets for this last weekend, and trepidatiously made my way onto a plane, fortified with my iPod full of corgi pictures and soothing music. Read more... )

tags in KotS at GAM

  • Nov. 9th, 2009 at 11:58 PM
One of the functions I can use at GirlAMatic is to set tags on the comics pages. So, for example, all the GAMoween pages I did are tagged with "GAMoween," and clicking that tag at the bottom of any page so tagged brings you to a display of all the other pages with that tag. Like this.

So I'm wondering, would it be interesting and/or useful to you if I did tags for the major characters, so you could get an index of all the pages where Morna appears, or where Sinead appears, and so on? It isn't hard at all to do, really. Might be nice for new readers, who might take a shine to a particular character. Might be nice for finding other appearances of some of the secondary characters like Garvin, Lisette, Suzette, etc, etc.

Monday Morning Poem: Annie Stayed.

  • Nov. 9th, 2009 at 1:19 PM

My maternal grandfather died a couple of years ago.

We were very fond of each other – he took me to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (a full day and a half drive) from 7th grade through my high school graduation, a gift of immeasurable impact.  He was a bright, curious, caring, and endlessly enthusiastic man. He reacted with genuine joy whenever his didactic little granddaughter held forth on erudite topics.  I still remember his delight upon hearing me tear apart the production of Romeo and Juliet that was one of the first productions we saw together at OSF.

I didn’t ask for anything of his after he passed away; my mother knowingly brought me a few things that meant a lot, but all in all my memories were the most vivid token of our relationship.  Recently, however, his last wife sent my mother a number of his old files.  Including one entire manila folder full of every letter and picture and document I had ever sent him, or that my parents had sent him relating to me.

So I’ve rediscovered verything from short stories I wrote in second grade to novellas I wrote in middle school to graduation notices and e-mails and silly cards.  I haven’t quite had the strength to go through all of it yet, but one thing I did find:  the poem below.  I remember this odd, apocalyptic little poem quite well but had no record of it myself, so knowing that he had it all along is very touching.

And, now that he’s gone, the poem – being as its topic is a girl with a fondness for the departed – takes on a sweet poignance.

Anyway. Here it is.
Laundry day

Annie stayed.

Annie McSalva stood that day
but no one was there to enjoy her stay
only the ghosts had not gone away

Annie remained for the ghosts.

Annie McSalva walked down the streets
her feet tapping sidewalk to various beats
She looked in the theatres, all empty seats

Annie played Hamlet for ghosts.

Annie McSalva read all the books
out loud, in the library, and none gave sharp looks
the ghosts listened well in their crannies and nooks

Annie read on for the ghosts.

Annie McSalva swam in the pond
that led to the gutters and sewers beyond
but nobody stayed to drink that which was fond

to Annie, who swam with the ghosts.

Annie McSalva lay in the sun
and thought that the world had only begun
but the ghosts whispered back that it almost was done

Annie survived with the ghosts.

I had a fantastic weekend.

Things were busy, as always, but time opened up for some strange reason. There wasn't any looming immediate deadline, things at the college were rolling along well... I actually had time to hang back a bit and socialize. It was great.

Friday night we went out for Korean food down the street, engaged in great conversation and then dragged people back to Zub Haus for cocktails and video games. Street Fighter IV and LittleBigPlanet playing ensued. I can't remember the last time we just spontaneously hung out without needing an event, birthday or holiday to serve as the reason. It was great just hanging out because we could. Using the house as our headquarters was comfy and way cheaper than partying it up at a bar. Everyone had a ball.

Saturday morning I woke up and joked to Stacy that I had so much fun on Friday that I wanted to do it all again.

"Well, why don't you? We don't have anything planned for tonight" said the wise Stacy.

And so we did! We invited more people, pulled together a greater variety of wine and spirits, people brought amazing snacks and we all chilled out, chatted, laughed, played Apples To Apples, competed at video games and enjoyed cheeses, cookies, chocolate, crackers, fruit, dips, Halloween candy and much more. I finally shooed people out the door at 4am but I honestly could have kept going until dawn.

Today Stacy, Chris, Eric, Derek and I ventured up to Pacific Mall for shopping, wandering and more good food. We just got in the door a little while ago and I'm feeling completely satisfied about our weekend. A burst of social goodness that was much needed and appreciated.

Our friends kick ass.

Drove into Calgary this morning to take some fiends up on a breakfast invite. The bacon and coffee totally made it worth while. The blue skies and golden fields backed by snow topped mountains was a nice touch too.

I have awesome friends that care a lot about me. I am very lucky. (and they feed me bacon)
